A Portrait in the Haworth Art Gallery

Updated: Sep 4, 2022

Anne Haworth photographing Anne Haworth at the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington, Lancashire. I have known this portrait of Anne - benefactor, philanthropist and art collector - since I visited the Gallery as a child. Anne was the sister of the cotton-mill owner and local councillor William Haworth. During my childhood, Anne's portrait (photograph with oil) and that of William, were consigned to a small upstairs room but she is now on display in the ground-floor Billiard Room alongside her brother, together with the portrait of Joseph Briggs - the donor of the Gallery's magnificent collection of Tiffany glass. The Gallery has never looked better, nor felt more welcoming than in recent years, under the management and curatorial care of Gillian Berry and her team. A current exhibition 'The Art of Giving' showcases the role that Anne played in the establishment of the Haworth Art Gallery. The Gallery cafe is wonderful too.
